Why Lacuna Kitchen?
Food connects – but what if it also reflects inequality and untold stories?
The kitchen is transformed into a space for community-building and critical reflection, inviting both participants and audience members to consider their own role within social and economic systems. Through food, Lacuna Kitchen gives voice to the lived experiences of kitchen workers, while making the impact of colonialism and migration on today’s society tangible. Blending theatre, gastronomy and social activism, the project aims to question and reimagine dominant societal structures and hierarchies.
Lacuna Kitchen sheds light on the untold stories of kitchen workers, while challenging conventional roles within gastronomy. Through this co-creative project, the aim is to foster a more inclusive culinary world and arts sector. In an unequal world, many people are unwillingly – and sometimes forcibly – pushed into certain types of work, such as kitchen labor, to serve the needs of the majority who benefit from it. Lacuna Kitchen highlights the darker sides of so-called Dutch gezelligheid, the privilege of “just going out for dinner every weekend,” and the idea of hospitality in restaurants.
As a long-term research project, Lacuna Kitchen dives into the complex layers of our shared colonial histories, with particular attention to their lasting effects on today’s society. During a residency at Arnhems Stadsatelier, hosted by Theater a/d Rijn, the team explored how migration and colonialism have shaped the local food culture in Arnhem. Food connects – but what if it also mirrors inequality and forgotten stories? Through conversations with kitchen workers, archival research and participatory cooking sessions, overlooked narratives are made visible – and tangible. By linking past and present, and crossing paths between diverse communities, Lacuna Kitchen aims to shine a light on the rich and painful mosaic of shared heritage.
